School Closings/DelaysIn keeping with a goal of providing optimum welfare and safety for all students, Racine Unified will close if weather or other emergency deems travel to and from school hazardous; utility or natural gas outages; or if the National Weather Service issues a wind chill WARNING for Racine County (defined as wind chills of 35 degrees below zero or colder for more than 1 hour.) A decision to close or delay school will normally be made by 5:30 a.m. and will be based upon road conditions, weather reports, police reports and inspection of streets and campuses by Racine Unified personnel.
When schools are to be closed, the media outlets listed on the school closing procedures page will be notified between 5:45 – 6:30 a.m. In addition, school cancellations or delays will be listed on the RUSD Web site. Interested parties are encouraged to register on the Web site to receive an emergency notification e-mail.
We recognize that any change from the normal school schedule may cause some disruption, but there may be conditions which make it unavoidable. These options will be used sparingly and only when conditions make such procedures absolutely necessary. It is very important, however, that you be prepared for such an emergency. Please make arrangements for alternate supervision for your child/children with a friend, relative or neighbor if necessary.
