RUSD Superintendent Dr. Ann Laing & Jim Beere Named Volunteers of the Year
Every year, hundreds of caring people volunteer with United Way of Racine County. At the Salute to Leadership luncheon held on May 30, 2013, United Way recognized two individuals whose volunteer efforts on behalf of the organization are truly outstanding. For their role as Schools of Hope Leadership Council chairs, Jim Beere, president of Pioneer Products, and Dr. Ann Laing, superintendent of Racine Unified School District, were named United Way of Racine County’s Volunteers of the Year.
Beere and Laing were recognized as champions of United Way’s education initiative, which has just completed its pilot year at Fratt, North Park, Olympia Brown and Wadewitz elementary schools. Schools of Hope provides young children with tutors on a regular basis to increase reading achievement in the early grades. Since October 2012, almost 170 Schools of Hope volunteers have provided over 1,500 hours of one-on-one reading support to 257 children. Beere and Laing’s commitment to Schools of Hope has set the stage for the program to expand to four additional schools in the fall: Giese, Janes, Roosevelt, and S.C. Johnson.
