North Star Vision
At the Racine Unified School District, all eyes are on the North Star.
North Star is a shared vision that clearly identifies the path to successful completion of high school for all RUSD students with an ultimate goal of every graduate being ready for a career and/or college. This goal aligns with the RUSD mission of “Educating Every Student to Succeed.”
The path of progress starts at kindergarten and runs through elementary, middle and high school. Key measures of success, at grade levels along the way, are used to monitor student progress.
The North Star Vision uses data to help educators identify gaps in the district’s current progress. Each school is supported in efforts to address achievement gaps by developing improvement plans that are specific to the needs of its students.
The belief that all RUSD employees contribute to student success was a key factor in developing the North Star Vision because in RUSD, “all means all.” For more than a year, a collaborative group, including representatives from the School Board, Racine Administrators Association, Racine Education Association (REA), Racine Educational Administrators Association (REAA), Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 152 and district administrators worked together to create the North Star Vision.
The North Star Vision was rolled out in March 2009 at a series of meetings held at the Wingspread Conference Center, hosted by the SC Johnson Foundation. A team from each RUSD school, consisting of a Directing Principal, REA building representative, REAA building representative and SEIU Local 152 building staff member, received presentations with each stakeholder group playing a part. The individual school teams then shared the North Star Vision with their staff members.
It’s fitting that the concept of using the North Star as a constant symbol to guide progress was adopted by RUSD. Harriett Tubman, the famed humanitarian of the mid-1800s, led many slaves to freedom in the north by following the North Star in the night sky. Racine’s heritage includes its activity in the Underground Railroad movement.
You’re invited to catch the North Star Vision as well. Please review the North Star trajectory on the RUSD Web site and ask an RUSD staff member how you can get involved!
